Going Gatsby

During my time at University, I was Vice President of Film Society – the society that represents Film students but welcomes all disciplines to join us on socials, events, quizzes, debates and for just general (non-academic but film related) fun.

For our final social of the year – and for some of us (myself included) our final social at the University of Southampton – we decided to combine literature and film, and host a Great Gatsby extravaganza!

It’s a novel that means a lot to most people, as it was a deciding and game-changing book when studying A Levels at Sixth Form or College and was a transition from secondary learning to an independent academic environment. The Baz Luhrmann film is equally acclaimed among young people mainly due to it’s Jay-Z curated soundtrack which features Lana Del Ray, Fergie and Beyonce. So it felt only right to honour the book and film and throw an incredible party to remember for years to come!

We hired a local Southampton nightclub and transformed it into a 1920s prohibition haven with Gatsby themed props and cocktails.

Below are some images taken at the event by Betul Ocean of PhotoSoc.

Even Gatsby himself showed up! Leonardo DiCaprio was a firm favourite with party goers.

We also had Gatsby themed cocktails ranging from Long Island Iced Teas to Mar-Tea-Ni, Bees Knees and Green Light Collins! They were delicious and all on the house with FilmSoc fitting the bill for the night!

The night was a great success with over 70 people in attendance enjoying the Gatsby music, the themed cocktails and the prohibition environment marking it the most successful event in recent FilmSoc history!

It was also a credit to the hard work that the FilmSoc committee and myself put into the event. The photos are fabulous and ones that I will treasure forever.
