Anastasia is coming!

Anastasia: The Musical is heading to Broadway next spring!

Entertainment Weekly is reporting that Anastasia will be heading to the Great White Way in April 2017 following a successful run in Hartford earlier in the year.

The musical will be based on the 1997 animated adaption which was inspired by the tale of the lost youngest daughter of the last Tsar of Russia. The film follows the final days of the Russian Empire to Paris and sees a young Anya trying to learn her past after losing all memories following a dramatic escape from the sieged Grand Palace.

Anya is joined on her quest by Dimitry, a scheming and witty con artist who is using Anya to collect the grand reward for returning the missing Princess Anastasia. Little they both know that she is the Princess!

Broadway star Christy Altomare will star reprise her role as Anya with Derek Klena playing love interest Dimitry.

As a 90’s baby, I remember this film very fondly. I remember dancing around in my living room like the ballerina in the music box to ‘Once Upon A December’, the beautiful lullaby that Grandmother sings to Granddaughter and falling in love with Anya’s little puppy Pukha. I even watched (and enjoyed at the time) the straight to VHS sequel; Bartok the Magnificent !

The film had a surprising all star cast with Meg Ryan as Anya and John Cusack as Dimitry as well as Angela Lansbury as The Dowager Empress Marie and Christopher Lloyd as Rasputin. It’s a shock that this film is not more popular and not a classic alongside other animated 90s film. The songs are exceptional, including ‘Journey To The Past’ and ‘Once Upon A December’ which both received Academy Award and Golden Globe noms.

The film holds up better than Disney’s The Hunchback of Notre Damn released in the same year, yet is nowhere near as highly regarded! It’s a shame really, I just hope this new musical is a hit and encourages people to relive the film!

My only two hopes is that; 1) The creators have done the film justice and 2) They bring it to London’s West End soon!
